Good news for Laptop Recording . . .

USB is now 40-times faster.

Looks like I might have to hold off on my original plans of throwing my audiosport quattro in to the Chicago River.

For those who already have laptops with the old USB ports, there are PCMCIA adapters available. Looks like this could really open the door to some serious Laptop recording power, offering what appears to be a usable alternative to firewire. In case you're wondering, I'm not spamming, but I have included a couple of links I came accross (see below).

For any of you guys who might know something more about this (Gidge?, others?), I would greatly appreciate your added insight. Thanks!

I'd like to know what a guys options are that has a brand spankin new laptop (1 month old) that has IEEE 1394 Firewire, 2 USB ports, paralell, and serial ports, CD-ROM and CD-RW burner. 256MB RAM and a 15 GB HDD. What kins of sound external sound card(s) you you recomend to me? Firewire or USB? Which is faster? For my regular DAW ai am running Logic Audio Platinum with a Delta 66 sound card. For the lap top I would deffinitly need an external sound card to do all the A/D conversions and D/A conversions. What is out there for that. I have never even thought about a Laptop. But I like the idea.

PS what is the Audiosport that you want to throw in the river. I have seen it but never asked what it is.

But doesn't the source USB device have to support the new USB 2 protocol? That is, the data won't come in any faster than the source device is spitting it out. SO you would have to get a new USB 2-compatible Audiosport, no?

Good question.

Doesn't really matter, anyway. I still haven't gotten the damn thing to work. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever talked to anyone or even HEARD of anyone who has ever actually used one. Hmmm. Not even a single review anywhere from someone who has even indicated that they plugged it in and got it to work -- let alone what they thought of it.

I can't believe what an idiot I am for buying this thing. Check out some of the comments about it on zzounds:

Right now, it is merely a great idea on paper. And speaking of paper, it does make a great paperweight. It's supposed to be an audio interface that connects via usb port. Multiple audio inputs, 24-bit/96K compatible.
