GarageBand

I started on GarageBand before I switched to Logic. GarageBand is an excelent beginning DAW that has a really simple learning curve. I'd recommend it to anybody who is just starting out.
 
I'm still using it, but I'm about to shift over to Logic Pro 9. Apple has some pretty good getting started basic videos on it's website under support. Lots of books at the library on it as well!
