Firewire interface with FW external HD?

I'm planning to buy a laptop in the next two or so months, and I'm planning on running an external 8+ channel sound interface and an external hard drive. I'm still fuzzy on how compatible these devices are.

My question is: Can I run a FW interface (maybe the coming devices from Presonus (FirePod) or from Edirol or Hercules) at the same time as a Firewire hard drive while recording eight or more 24-bit tracks?

Would there be any benefit to using a sound interface of one type (USB 2.0 or FW) and an external hard drive of the other type?

If I had to choose one device, hard drive or sound interface, to use the apparently slower USB 2.0, which should it be?

Here's an article that shows the differing speeds of external hard drive using USB 2.0 vs. FW, with USB 2.0 significantly slower:

Thanks for any help you can give.
