Fan Noise or ???

I am over at my friend's house, working with his N-Track.
When he turns his computer on & we pull up N-track, there is a fairly high VU level befre we even plug in to play.
IWe suspect that this is fan noise, but can it be something else?
How do we get the VU Levels down to a respectable level before we even plug in?

Could it be a soundcard problem as well?

Any comments/ideas would be appreciated.

Have you tried...

Turning off the monitors, putting on some headphones, turning the volume way up, and seeing what you hear?

Might be something as simple as a loose connection somewhere. The jacks are getting old on my soundcard, so that's a problem that I have sometimes.

Unplug any inputs to the soundcard, what level do you see on the meter? Many cheapo soundcards will have noise at -40dB or worse. Or it could be a cable.
