hi all ,

This is my second home studio i've built, i'll give a list of what im working with for now.

HP i5 6g ram win 10
usb interface: yamaha audiogram 6( prob 5-6 years old)
MXL V57M condenser mic
decent epiphone acoustic
yamaha 4 string single pickup bass
fender sidekick 30 bass amp.

Using Ableton live 9.7 .

im still building my studio, but have a quick question. im getting horrible air sound when im recording vocals or bass. (the acoustic not so much)

Any ideas

Hi Weld,
Can you tell us a bit more? Are you using the MXL to record all three instruments, or are you DIing the bass?
Would you be able to upload a clip demonstrating this 'air sound' ?

Welcome to HR! :)

is the air sound when its sitting idle? like a fan to the computer can sound really loud when the mic doesnt have sound to it.

the noise floor with the mic on shouldnt change if its acoustic guitar or vocal, so I wondered if you are moving the mic possibly closer to a fan or "air noise" source.?

the equipment list is sparse and common these days, a interface and mic and DAW (with plugins)
sleek and simple and uncluttered.

this makes me wonder too-

With the Yamaha AUDIOGRAM6, you get a powerful mixer-type audio interface with two mono input channels and two stereo input channels. Each of the two mono channels features combo-type connectors for direct connection of a wide range of sound input devices. And because you can change the input sensitivity of each channel for direct connection of electric guitars and basses with a push of the MIC/INST select buttons, there's no need to study up on impedance and other specialist recording topics.

One-touch switching between mono and stereo inputs

Using the PAN button, you can instantly turn the two mono input channels on your AUDIOGRAM6 into a fully panned stereo channel and vice versa. For example, you can use this Stereo Coupling function when recording live performances, outdoor audio material, and many other stereo sources with a pair of dynamic microphones. In fact, Stereo Coupling also allows your interface to function beautifully as a simple mixer with three stereo input channels.

oh huh, i never even thought about the stereo rec options. thats's cool, yeah, like i said im working my way to all my equipment. im replacing the audiogram 6 with a presonus audiobox 2.0, and im getting rokit 6's here soon. oh I also have a laucnchey mini by novation. It works pretty cool with ableton, im just starting with ableton too, so I know there is a lot to know and learn, but im excited about the process

If you're recording amps with that big condenser you're probably recording a lot of low-level amp hiss that you may not even notice a few feet away. Generally that kind of background stuff disappears in the mix, but a clip of that would be helpful. (You said it wasn't bad with the acoustic - that clip is Ok, though sounds a little boomy.)

Do you have a shock mount for the mic?

And, yes, IMO an SM57 is going to be easier to manage micing amps. No guarantee it won't still have some noise if it's just the amp you're hearing, but self-noise and rumble will be less of an issue IME.

That's what piqued my interested. You'd think noise issues would be on acoustic instruments and not the bass, since the bass should be substantially louder.
Will wait for the clips. Thanks Weld.

Once again we have a clip sent to diagnose 'a noise' but there is no silent part where we can listen/analyse for it!

Sounds fine to me (ok, yes, it would!) and a spectrum shows no artifacts but that is hard to tell of course.

Dave.
