Delta 44 sound output problem

I'm kind of new to the digital audio thing.
So ... please bear with me.

I'm running a Mac G4 with 448 megs of RAM.
I just purchased a Delta 44 audio interface.
Everything seems to be working fine except
for the sound output. It seems that even when
I plug two 1/4 inch plugs to the 1 and 2 outs as
well as the 3 and 4 outs in the break out box
that I'm only receiving sound from one speaker.
I've tried a stereo receiver, headphones and
computer speakers using a Y-adapter with 1/4" plugs.
Just the left speaker was working in all cases.

I also seem to have a problem with output sound quality
only when I'm not in the audio application (Logic Delta).
It seems to distort and pop even when the gain is down.

I hope this make sense.

I like to know if I have a defective soundcard of break out box
so I can return the thing.

Thanks in advance.

Check the M-Audio Delta control panel ( or whatever the Mac equivalent is ) to make sure your pannnign settings are correct.

Also make sure your buffer settings are set correctly are not too low.

Other than that I can't really help as I have little experience with Macs in general and none as regards using them for audio.

Thanks for your reply.

The control panel I believe is essentialy the same on the Mac as is on the PC.
I have tried to up the buffer settings and the pan settings to no avail.

I even tried the tech support via e-mail a couple of days ago.
They have since not replied.

I'm out of options except to return the Delta where I found it.
It's too bad to ... because I got a good deal on it.

If the recent hell I went through trying to get this to work as well as the lack of tech support are any indication ... I don't think I'm buying anything from M-Audio anytime soon.

Is there anyone who experienced the same problem?

sorry i didnt see this earlier.

When you open up the Delta mixer control panel, are the outs all uin-muted and the volume turned up on them? Also, how do you have the Delta mixer busses routing? This will determine how the soundcard outs are configured.

This Delta mixer control panel is where you will need to mess around to get it to work. Once you have your config set, it's good to go from then out.

If its not fixed, let me know and we'll get it to work.

Thanks.

The mute is off with the volume up all the way on all
the inputs in the mixer. The master volume is up as well.

As far as the patchbay router ...
I've tried many different routings which produced the
same poor results. There is really not much to choose from.
On the H/W Out 1/2 column I have tried the SM/ASIO 1/2 setting
which is the same as WavOut 1/2 on the PC. I've tried the monitor
mixer setting. Plus I have tried the H/W settings.
I've tried the same test on the H/W Out 3/4 column and
putting the plugs in #3 and #4 in the break out box.
Same results.

Another thing I noticed is that everytime I've changed the setting
the sound is distorted and then after a few minutes it clears up.
However, it seems that matter what I do, the sound only come out
of the left speaker. Which is the basic problem. Although I'm concerned
about the distortion too.

Perhaps I'm still missing something.

Thanks again.

So what happens when you just try to play a CD or something? Do you get sound just from the left then? Or is it only in Logic? I had Logic and could never get it to work right with my Delta, but I'm not sure if I had the same problem as you.

As long as the channels are un-muted, you should be getting sound. If not, there may actually be an issue somewhere.

I tried playing a few mp3 files. The same thing happened ... distortion ...
plus sound only coming through one speaker.

Curious thing is ... the sound quality seems better in Logic (no distortion) but
the sound is still going through one speaker.

The whole thing seems weird to me.

The good thing is that I have a Delta 66 on hold waiting for me if
I can't get the 44 to work. The people I made the purchase with
said they would make an exchange plus the extra because of
the slight upgrade. They have no more 44s.

Question ... Is $209 a good deal for a Delta 66?

Thanks.

doesn't make sense to me either... if the meters in the hardware control panel are showing both channels, then it is working both left and right...

the only thing that would make any sense would be there has be a problem in the signal chain between the outputs of the 44 and the speakers... maybe a mono jack somewhere that should be stereo instead... can't be shure cause from your posts it is hard to tell what you are doing after you leave the 44 and before reaching the speakers... power amp? powered speakers? are you going 2 mono jacks on the out to one stereo jack for the speakers or going 2 mono lines the whole way?

If you're going 2 mono jacks to a stereo jack... like a Y of some sort... after you get the stereo, all adapters, jacks, and cables would have to be stereo to keep the L/R signal... since its just coming out of the left speaker, I suspect you may have a mono plug/adapter/jack someplace that you need a stereo one... that would certainly explain it... the mono would only allow the L signal to pass and ignore the R signal...

just something to think about...

P.S. If they'll give u a Delta66 for $209 I'd take it... Musicians friend sells em for $319... if they want $209 on top of what u paid for the 44, then I would say its not a very good deal cause they sell the 44 for $269... a difference between the two of $50... $209 compared to $50 seems a bit high... even for the most rediculous music stores...

Thanks for the info.
Sorry if I did not seem clear about the connection to the break out box.

1) I've tried headphones. Of course headphones only uses a mono plug so
I utilized a Y-adapter to 1 and 2 out to the break out box. I also tried
3 and 4 along with changing the necessary settings on the control panel.
Again ... All I received was left speaker output.

2) I tried my multimedia computer speakers (w/subwoofer). The setup has two inputs. I tried using both directly (1 and 2 from the breakout box to
1 and 2 to speaker system). I tried only using one input and two outputs on the breakout box using the same Y adapter I used from the headphones.
Again ... same result.

I'm assuming that both would use a stereo signal or
is there something I'm missing?

I would like to know if I might be doing something wrong because I
would hate to make and exchange and simply have the same problem with
the 66.

P.S. I originally paid $149 for the 44. That's one of the reasons why I want
this to work because it was such a great deal. The 66 is going for $209.
It's one of these closeout sales ... that's why it's difficult to make a return.
However ... an exchange is no problem.
