I use a fostex mr-8 standalone recorder, but then i dump those tracks onto my computer to mix/master in cubase. My question is, can i buy a tascam 424, basically a usb interface/control surface, and contol the slider on the screen. Is this like a vst controller that will sync with my computer.

By the way, my computer sucks and is in no way capable of recording direct into it.

That depends on whether your version of Cubase supports remote control.

It's got to be able to recognise and act upon the midi commands that slide the faders and twiddle the knobs

it comes with a custon version of cubase too. if i decide to use that, then i wont need anything else.

my process again:

record to a standalone digital multitracker, load to comp as a wav file. mix and master in custom cubase version for the interface.

so will it work?

i dont no anything about midi, and dont do any recording with it.
