Connecting my condenser mic to my Motu Ultralite Mk3

In the manual, it states this exactly:

"Do not connect a +4 (line level) XLR cable to the front-panel inputs (because of the preamps). Use a rear-panel quarter inch input instead"

Does this mean I should not connect a standard female to male XLR cable to connect the mic to the interface.
SHould I use an XLR to 1/4 inch jack or TRS cable instead?

Also, the phantom power doesn't turn on when the XlR to XLR is plugged in, would that be for any particular reason? Or am I just turning it on incorrectly?

"Do not connect a +4 (line level) XLR cable...

Note it says LINE-LEVEL. As in a line-level signal coming out of a pre-amp or compressor.
That's a different voltage than a mic.
The front inputs are designed to for MIC-LEVEL xlr's or line-level 1/4".

So plug your mic in and be happy.

Well, on your first question, a condenser mic isn't line level, it's mic level so will be fine going into a mic pre amp. In fact, the pre amp is essential to hear anything!

I can't help with the phantom though. Most interfaces (including the MOTU units that I've used) have a physical switch for phantom--doesn't your Ultralite?

Don't try the quarter inch input--that'll bypass the mic pre amp and would never provide the necessary phantom power either.
