Ok, I'm fixing to spend alot of money on some recording equipment. I've had an analog 4-track for about 3 years. I'm gettin Cakewalk pro9. I know i need a decent sound card, such as the lexicon core, or delta, or whatnot. I need to know what other components i need to get to record acoustic drums, and electric guitar bass keys vocals etc. I'm not looking for a million dollar set up. Just decent priced, where i can get decent sounds. Plus I need to know if Cakewalk is really easy to use after I begin recording. Please help-
Chris

you'll needyour whole analog signal path... mics, cables, mixer, etc.. just like you did for your 4 track. except if you had a little cassette 4trk, it probly had some WEAK little mixer built in... you'll want a real mixer. search around for opinions on that.

what DO you wanna spend?

xoxo

Ya I know about the mixer, mic's and cables. I just need to know about what i'll need to plug my instruments into the computer, so i can mix them down on cakewalk, and anything else. thanks

to mix to your computer, you need a decent sound
card, thats it. (Of course you already know mics,
cables,etc.)

Is Cakewalk easy? No, its not. It is EASIER than
a lot of the other Stuff out there, but still
expect a mild learning curve. David

Thanks David, So I plug up the equipment into the mixer, run it into the breakout box, and i can hit record and start from there? If the breakout box has only 8 outputs, can i only listen to 8 tracks back after i record, or is that just for monitoring? After i finish recording can i listen to the finished version by hitting play, and it come through my computer speakers? Forgive me for being so ignorant, like I said, I'm brand new to it, never even touched it, i'm just fixing to buy it. thanx
Chris

Sure Ibanez, I will answer your last question(s)!!
Yes, you plug in stuff to the breakout box, or
mixer, and go from there. If it is a mic, you
might need a pre-amp or phantom power for
condenser mics. What mixer do you have, or what
are you planning to buy?

Run like crazy from that Lexicon Card. A lot of folks
have big problems with that one.

Outputs on a breakout box/soundcard can be confusing.
In theory, you only need two, for stereo sound.
In reality, I like mixers, and its fun to move faders
instead of a mouse.

If you use Cakewalk Pro9, you must assign each
part to an output. (My Darla 24 has eight outputs
too). If you record 16 tracks, you could assign
tracks 1 and 2 two output one, etc. It is
flexible; you could assign 12 tracks to the same output
and have 6 having their own outputs, etc.

Outputs have nothing to do with how many tracks
can be recorded or heard. You could have 2 outputs
and hear 100 tracks.

Your computer speakers should be just fine.

One warning: Soundcards like the delta, lexicon,
darla, etc. are advertised as plug and play.
Nosiree Bob, it is Plug and Pray. Lots O problems
are possible, like bad drivers, Irq conflicts,
compatibility with existing cards, etc.

Be patient with it, it will all work out in time,
and then once you hit that play button, the
glory of you playing all those parts and
making music will justify the hours you spent
installing sound cards. Good Luck, David

What if i get a midi interface...and run each instrument through my Digitech processor, which as a midi out..could i do it like that, and would it be more, or just as productive?

Hi, I dont really understand your question, so
therefore cant really give an answer. A midi interface
is of course a must for sequencing keyboards,
wont affect anything else. Midi on an effects box
basically is only good for parameter changes,
unless you are doing quite advanced work.

Maybe try your post again, what exactly do you wish
to accomplish? Cheers David

This is witout a doubt the best BBS in the world, thanks guys for everything! David what I meant was Can I run my Guitar through my processor, which has a midi output on it, run that into the midiman interface box, into a track onto the computer? and keep repeating that with bass, vocals, drums through the digitech into the interface onto separate tracks, and then run straight from keyboards to the interface box, is that possible to do, and does it work? Heh I really dont know how other to explain it, I may be totally dreamin about this!

C7 Thank you very much, I have planned to purchase the Cakewalk Power book, will it walk me through almost anything? What do you mean about having to juggle cards on PCI busses, you mean some of the soundcard may not work?
Thanks Guys-
Chris

Hi Chris, I guess the short answer is no.

Midi is a bit confusing at first, but once you
get it down, it's straight forward.
Midi is a way in which machines can talk to each
other, and control each other. Think of it as
the ultimate universal Remote control: Just like
your tv remote can control your VCR or cable, thats
what midi does, in simple terms.

Your vocals, bass, guitar cant be transmitted over
midi in any way. They are audio tracks, and need
to go to an audio interface(sound card).

Your effects processor has Midi for one purpose,
to control the parameters from another source, like
a computer.that means you can change which reverb
patch you are using, and Cakewalk will remember
the changes.

Your midi keyboard will go to the midi interface.
Cakewalk wont "record" your keyboard, it will
record data from it, like what note you played,
off and on, pitchbend,etc.

Hope this helps, David
