Bak files - what are these?

I have been sent the files from an album project on a memory stick by a studio I have been working at.

The files relating to the individual instrument tracks are in the form of 'bak' file extensions (with the WAVs in another folder). I understand these are some kind of 'back up' files.

What are these and how/can they be easily opened up and worked on in studio software?

It depends on which daw software you are using. But most of the time, it is a previous version of a file. All you have to do is change the extension back to wav, cpr, or what ever the file was originally to use it again.
