Are ATA drives really any good for audio?

Hello everyone,

just wanted to get some thoughts about using ATA (IDE bus) hard discs for recording audio files. Are they at all suitable or is SCSI the only way to go?

I get 36 tracks with an IDE drive.
Is that suitable?
Many folks are drifting toward smaller 10,000 RPM SCSI drives to bring them somewhat into the realm of affordability, but giving up size (even if you'll mostly never need all of the space) for speed is not a complete no-brainer. It's really nice to have space for several projects so you don't have to erase all the project files from one before diving into another.
And remember that non-destructive editing is a very disc-intensive activity.
Sure I'd love to have a drive that goes even faster, but that's the way it will always be.

drstawl,

would you mind posting what software you're using, your processor speed, ram, and are you using 1 hard drive for everything, or a seperate audio drive? Thanks ~ nommad

leucopogon - use the search functionality and browse some old posts. IDE versus SCSI is probably the most discussed topic in this forum. Search for RAID as well to see what you can do to boost HD performance even further.
