any success with MD -> PC -> CD transfers? or PC -> MD transfers?

I've got a PIII 700, a 7200 rpm HD, 128 megs of RAM, and an HP 4/2X CD-RW, running win98. I've also got a MD deck with TOSlink optical S/PDIF I/O.

Mostly I have live funk/rock/fusion recordings on MD that I want to edit on the PC. I'd like to equalize, normalize, and generally sweep the dirt under the rug, and then be able to burn to CD or back to MD, free of SCMS.

1. Has anyone had any success with a project like this, and would a $500 card perform better than, say a $79 Xitel card?
2. Are there any issues with grabbing the realtime bitstream from the MD?
3. Do cards have an input listener or do I try and push play at the same time I press the enter key?
4. Would I record the MD signal as a .wav?
5. Anyone had any problems with particular cards?

- Thanks
