I'm currently using AMD a4-3400 quad core., Planning to shift my Processor to Intel core i5/I7. Is it a practical choice? Or just stay with my quadcore? Thank you guys.

From what I've read/been told AMD seems to be the go to for gaming and Intel seems to be the go to for audio or whatever production work.
Now, I can't tell you why. Just what I see the general consensus seems to be.
Having said that, my DAW has a AMD Phenom II X4 :D
And I've also heard something about Apple even switching to some AMD stuff. Can't recall if it was about CPUs or GPUs though, so...

I'd go with the Intel. They're a bit pricier but their better fit for music production.

I wouldn't recommend the i3. It's really not for anything professional. i5's are okay but I'd recommend one of the quad+ core i7's. They're fast and nothing will get in its way.

Sandy bridge is currently at the top of the CPU market. It's really fast and dominates. But you never know, AMD might release new technology tomorrow morning.

AMD's (like kidkage said) more for gaming instead of multimedia.

Here's a thread over at PreSonus forums:

What processor for music production? intel or amd?
