The ratios may be a little skewed but you get the idea.

Intel i3 3.4GHz w/4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD-RW, Win 8, $250 from Staples before CA. tax and shipping. Dedicated to recording.

    Woohoo.

    Desktop?

Now you just need all those pesky peripherals like a monitor... and an audio interface.

Desktop. At that price point I don't think you can get a refurbished Chromebook. Already have a monitor (not that adding a $100 for one changes the ratios much), and a Sound Devices USBPre 2.

Does that sound card have Windows 8 drivers yet? I've seen others having problems with this issue.

4G RAM is ok, but see if you can bump it up. I got 6K on my HP from Staples.

I'll be stepping back to Win 7 Pro regardless.

Yah. Another 4GB stick is only $25 and I'll be dropping a SSD in there in due course.
