Unwanted Hi Pitch Frequencies on 4 Track

Hi,

I am pretty new when it comes to using analog recording devices. I obtained a Tascam mkiii 4 track player about ten years ago. I have recently started to record on it and have noticed a very high pitch annoying frequency only when i play back my recordings. I know the machine hasn't been cleaned for ten years or think it has ever been demagnetized.

I went ahead and cleaned the pinch roller and capstan pretty well but the high frequency still remains, though I still haven't demagnetized the 4 track. I was wondering if that high pitch frequency is most likely caused because I have never demagnetized it? Has anyone else experienced an annoying high pitch frequency that flutters uncontrollably and should demagnetizing help fix this?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced!
