Portastudio 414 help

Ok so this is probably going to be a terribly dumb question, but I'm a tape newbie and just purchased a Tascam Portastudio mkii.

And my problem is that I can't press down the record button. I'm following all instructions in the manual, but I can't for the life of me press the damn 'record' button. I've run the cassette past the leader tape, and am pressing the record + play button at the same time. But the record button just doesn't want to go down.

What am I doing wrong? Is it the tape i'm using? I just found some commercial tape and am trying to record over it.

Hi,
Is the cassette write protected?
If so, pop some sticky tape over the tab holes.

Long shot - I've never used a porta before.

If it's a commercial tape, it probably is write protected. You need to tape over the holes or get a blank tape.
