Almost everywhere I look for tips on compressing drums to help tame some of the wild peaks it says to use a medium attack time. My question is this, if I have say a snare that I want to apply a compressor to make the strikes sound a bit more uniform (not at all limiting though) and I use a medium attack time... wouldn't that not help the wild strikes because the loudest part of the strike on a snare drum, like on all other drums is right away. I would think you would want to have a super fast attack time to tame those peaks... Could someone explain this to me please...

just wanted to say this is such an awesome forum. and I have learned a lot from here in the recent days.

I mainly sing to pre-mixed instruments ( karaoke). I am wondering will it improve the quality of my recording in anyway if I buy more or add a bit more expensive equipment. Or if I had to spend the money where should I invest for the most bang.

Here are the things i have

1. Shure beta 58A
2. M -audio Fast track - basic version
3. DAW-Ableton
4. Fostex monitor speakers
5. Headphones

Will getting a pre-amp make a difference to the quality of the vocal recording? I know there are some audio interface which comes with a pre amp.

The title should be "What should I do to improve my recording". I couldn't edit it sorry.

Good morning,

I'm looking for some insight in regards to any standalone interfaces that are able to play back 4 separate outputs simultaneously. We use backing tracks for live shows but we're needing more than just the tracks(left) and click track(right).

I bought a small interface to use with a laptop, which worked, but during one of our biggest shows recently we started losing click track feeds in our monitors and it was almost disastrous.

So I got rid of that and would rather buy a unit that doesn't require a laptop, something I can simply hit 'play' on and adjust my levels accordingly.

I've been told that the Boss BR-8 would be my best bet, but any research that I've done on the unit, I can't seem to find many details on how the unit works.

Is the BR-8 what I need? Any other standalones that could deliver what I need?

Alright, so, I'm a pretty hardcore newb. I just purchased a (lightly) used Behringer Xenyx x1832 usb in hopes of officially starting my journey in the world of home studio-recording. Unfortunately, I quickly found out that it wouldn't be quite as simple as I had hoped. After a couple laps around the tree of confusion, a trip to guitar center, a good read through of the manual, google, and a fair amount of forums, I found I was supposed to download the driver. I own a mac, by the way. Well, after 15 or so trips to the download section of behringer.com, I can't find a driver for mac for the life of me. Thus brings me here, somewhat of my last resort before looking into other usb interfaces (God forbid).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

New to home recording and the forum. Record mostly guitar instrumentals, some vocals, acoustic and bass. Use old Marshalls, an LP, PRS, Strat and Taylor.

Have an SM-57 and recently purchased an ART VLA compressor, an ART Tube Pre-Amp and a Rode NT1-A.

My recorder is a Korg D1600 Mkii. For tracks previously recorded that I want to compress, the manual says to use the AUX OUT. It is an unbalanced 1/4" phone jack. I would assume this is mono only. However, the example in the manual states that you run out of the single AUX OUT and can bring it back into two inputs using the SubIn, 3 and 4 for example.

This is unclear to me. I ran individual mono tracks to the compressor using a 1/4" unbalanced cable last night and it worked great. It appears that I can run multiple tracks to the AUX OUT. Is it possible to run a stereo drum track mix out using a single unbalanced 1/4" cable to two XLR inputs to the compressor?

Thanks and any help would be much appreciated!!

I am on a long learning curve with this DP24.. I am having the opposite problem I used to have with low end units. They always came out too hot, but it was way easier to tame them than it is to push the DP24 up. My old Boss BR-8 and Fostex MR-8 recordings are outshining my Tascam ones even after a year of trial and error. Tracks sound dull and flat no matter what I try.

I recently tried boosting the gain on the input comp, with only using trace amounts of actual comp. It sounds slightly better, but clips the onboard pre. Track and master levels still peaking at -12, but the pre is lighting up.

My Q: What is the preamp clip indicating if my levels are -12? Also, any obvious advice to make this DP24 hotter without raising rec levels?
