I have 2 metal reels of Ampex 456 Studio Mastering Tape 2" (1990s) in boxes
I have 2 reels of Ampex Grandmaster 456 - one is 1/4", one is 1/2" (1983) in boxes
I have 1 reel of 3M 996 Audio Mastering Tape 1", in plastic case (1983)
all are 10 1/2 inch reels. Only one has splices - I think it's the 1/2".

They have been very well kept - my master tapes. At this point, I'd rather re-record these albums.
So what are they worth to people? Or where do you suggest I offer them for sale?
I'm in Colchester, Vermont.
Thanks for any responses!

What is the best device to sync two Tascam TSR-8 machines?

Greetings,

After buying a Tascam TSR-8 a couple of years ago and enduring constant headaches with trying to slave a DAW to it (I suspect the problem emanated from the sync box, but I've never bought another one to attempt testing that theory further than I already have), I've decided to buy a second TSR-8 in order to increase my available track count (which I'll be picking up tomorrow) and work strictly with tape.

My question is: what is the best sync device (and furthermore, what cables will I need) for these machines?

I did find this link:
The Tascam 238 FAQ
which lists several Tascam boxes, but these seem to pop up infrequently on eBay (not to mention that I never see them locally). Is there a third-party device which provides comparable (or superior) sync capabilities to the Tascam boxes, or is a Tascam unit my best bet?

Thank you

This is a continuation of another thread called "Proud New Owner." That one started off as me just being excited about my new ultra-clean 246 before I'd had a chance to test it. After fixing the broken control and capstan belts, here we are now.

<sigh> Well, son of a bitch.

Good news: I replaced the capstan belt and the control belt, and now the transport is purring like a kitten.

Bad news: Upon testing, I've found that tracks 2 and 3 are recording at very low volume compared to 1 and 4. I've cleaned the heads (no residue showed on the swabs) and demagnetized, and I'm still having the same problem.

I first tried recording to each track through channel 1. Once the problems showed up, I tried recording tracks 2 and 3 through their respective channels, just for the hell of it, and it didn't make any difference.

Anyone had any experience with this and know if it's fixable?

Thanks

Hey Guys... So I'm not exactly sure where this should go...

After the rather traumatic experience of purchasing a completely useless M-520 to go with my TSR-8, I settled on a Soundcraft Ghost 24 (not LE). I'm super happy with this mixer (although I really miss the M-312b I traded for the M-520).

I've tried searching about this on multiple forums, but I can't seem to find anything - most people interface these with a DAW setup, so that doesn't really help. The manual says that the board has the ability to change the tape inputs and group (buss) outputs from +4dbu (stock) to -10dbv. Has anyone successfully done this? Do you think this would cause problems if, say, 8 of the tape ins and the group outputs were -10dbv and the rest of the board was set to +4dbu?

Say I want to run an AUX send to a reverb unit or something, since the AUX outputs (and all of the other outputs) are +4dbu, will this boost the -10dbv level of the tape return? Or will it just keep the same level? Also, if I make this change, how will that effect the mixdown? I am going to a Tascam 32 right now... Will I just have to really watch the levels (and crank the gain if I'm monitoring off this machine)?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around incorporating new +4dbu equipment. I used to run a completely -10dbv setup (it was awesome), and I never had to think about levels getting all messed up between gear. I posted about this in The Rack, but my situation has changed completely... would it be better to get just get a Fostex 5030 and keep the board at +4dbu? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This machine arrived few days ago. When I powered it on, the screen was dead (levels + rec leds), so i phoned the seller. He said to open it and check LCD wires. I made screen to work, but when assembling the thing back, I've short-circuited something on the LCD PCB, and the transport (play, FF, RW, rec+play) is no longer working
I transport part + LCD is very similar to tascam 424 or any similar 4 track with no direct mechanical transport (like 414). I'll send the unit for the repairs soon, but i want to know is it repairable? The unit is much more hi-fi than my tascam 414 (which is very road-worthy piece of gear, never fails)
Can it be replaced with 424 "brain", mixer and motor parts are still 100 % working
