Hi guys,

I've been recording for a while but recently upgraded my mic to a Rhode NT1-A and I'm finding some real sensitivity issues. It sounds gorgeous when I sing the small notes close up for an intimate sound but I'm finding too many of my notes clip and distort. It's proving to be really difficult to get a clean edit without loads of clipping / distortion parts.

I've been wondering about compressor's for a while even with my last mic. I realise a lot of them are quite expensive so I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing before I buy one.

I've just started using mixcraft 5 which has a compressor effect but I don't really get the whole compression after recording thing? Isn't the recording already ruined if you have distortion?

Anyway, hope I'm making sense. Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

thanks for the help,
Karliene. :-)

API 500 Series Lunch Box
Great River MP-500NV (Mercenary Edition)
Pico 500 Compressor FCS (Rare!!! discontinued to focus on their rack gear)
Purple ODD EQ (The one and only)

All in absolute pristine condition (see Pics)

This chain eats up anything you through at it, not just vocals and was pretty much on every track we recorded. The only reason it was not on every track was i didn't want to fill up the whole song with the same mojo. The Pico compressor is with out a doubt the best compressor I have ever seen. You absolutely CANNOT screw up this guy. Most of the time even when slamming a track with it I would have to bypass to make sure It was even on...
The Great River PRE and Purple ODD should need no introduction other than this is the MOJO

Whole Kit and Kaboodle
$2050 Firm! Including Shipping
PayPal accepted

P.S. Not completely against splitting up the items but want to go for package deal first

My amp only has 1 input jack (and stereo one in the back that bypasses the preamp).

I need to be able to plug in at least 2 (preferably 3) guitars and a keyboard. Only 1 instrument will be played at a time (by me). I really need to be able to do this to prevent constant cable changing during a set. Right now in the 1st of tunes the band is working on I play acoustic 6 string for 16 songs, 12 string acoustic for 1, exctric for 2 and keyboard for 1. The next sets promise more changes. I understand that the various instruments will have different signal strengths, hopefully, I can adjust for that with a mixer's controls (as well as the instrument volume controls.

I have a big Mackie mixer, but it's overkill, and only offers 1 instrument-in channel, so I would still need to keep changing cables for each guitar change.
I tried using a 1/4" headphone splitter, but the volume control needs to be up on both guitars for either to work.

My thought was to use my Tascam US800 - it has 2 instrument-in jacks in front, plus the rear line-ins for the keyboard, but someone suggested that the dual-jacks (XLR/1/4") on the front panel are not very sturdy and will soon wear out so that the 1/4' parts don't make good contact.

I saw this NADY mixer (nice cheap price) but wonder if its really a piece of crap. I saw this mixer at Sweetwater (I trust them a lot more).

This can't be the first time someone has wanted to do this - no everyone has a guitar tech on stage to swap out cables each change-out!

very n00b and long question but a pretty simple answer or opinion is required...i am very new to the hardware world ...let me know if this is something i should post elsewhere if so

i am running ableton suite 8 with a focusrite scarlet 18i6, im tried of just mixing in the box and want to add a little beautifully old fashioned analog warmth but at times want to stay clean as well and i compiled a list of things i want. i have been researching like crazy for things in my price range and i really want all of it...but for one...i have no clue how to set it all up with my system...and at honestly i dont know exactly what to route through them. like the whole mix? or just a few tracks? and what cables i need...and how to connect them all together. but i know i want different options for vocal chains to suit as many different genres and types of vocalists and instruments as possible so here is my list please tell me what you can if you want. if im missing anything, have different opinions, or how to route it thanks

Preamps:
daking mic pre one
Chameleon labs 581 Microphine Preamplifier
Focusrite OctoPre MkII Dynamic (for drums though ADAT i guess)
Focusrite ISA One Analogue Microphone Preamp
Golden Age Project Pre-73 DLX Microphone Preamplifier

Compressors:

(not sure of the difference between these two chameleon labs compressors; one for singe tracks or before the interface or for after ?? actually that same question for all the compressors)

Chameleon Labs 7802 Stereo Opto Tube Compressor
Chameleon Labs 7720 stereo compressor
Golden Age Project comp54
FMR RNC (really nice compressor)

EQ:

same question for the eqs as well, dont know where they go)

7602 MKII Microphone Preamp / EQ
Speck ASC-T
Microphones:
Shure SM57 (like 3)
Shure sm7b
Shure SM58
Shure KSM44
AKG 414 xls
AKG 451
Chameleon labs TS-1 MKII
Audio Technica AT4050
Audio Technica AT 4041
Audio Technica ATM-25

and i think i need better a/d converters right?? where would they go...sorry for all of this at once. i know its a "hold my hand" type of question..i just feel i need a push in the right direction. there is a lot of music in me, i just need to figure out how to get it out...thanks for reading all of this...

I was in KC this weekend with my younger son for his soccer tournament. During a break between his games, I stopped by a local studio that had an Otari MX-series 2-track for sale and listed on Craigslist. It's one of those very common BII-2 machines. Not the prettiest, but it's fully working and even set up for ATR tape. Did a test recording at the studio and it worked great. So, now I also have a newer mix machine that has gentle tape handling, quiet capstan motor and ability to do both IEC and NAB eq. I'll try to post a picture soon.

Cheers,

Hello everyone, I'm going to be recording an evening of spoken word, poetry and storytelling in a little local theatre. The actual stage space measures Width:8m Length:4m, so not massive. I am looking at the best recording options, in particular the best stereo mic setup for this. I am stuck between a x/y and a/b micing strategy - any comments on this would be appreciated, in particular I wonder how much phase cancellation I would get in a space this big using a/b, and how much reduction in stereo image I might get using x/y? Should I position the mics low to the ground or at head height? Also does anyone have any suggestions for suitable mics that could be employed? Any help would be massively appreciated!

Hey all.

I use Reaper through Windows 7 64bit, my computer is an HP Pavilion Slimline Desktop. Im having a terrible time with exporting/rendering and the sound quality of my songs.

I spend a lot of time recording and mixing the songs carefully, only to have the sound quality derailed when exporting/rendering them out of Reaper. I used to use Magix Music Studio 12 Deluxe a while back and never had that problem before. That program isnt compatible with 64 bit OS's so I decided to take on Reaper.

I usually render to mp3. I know that this format isnt known for quality, but Ive never had this problem at all with the last program. My tracking/mixing room is treated and I used Equator D5 Monitors(pair). Im fairly certain that the songs are getting jacked up through the rendering process after trying to troubleshoot why the mixes sounded bad.

I searched around, and it seems that a lot of people have this same problem, mixes coming out sounding different, certain instruments sounding strange, phasy. In my case the vocals come out sounding more telephonic in the mid range and of course its not as loud.

Im recording 24 bit 44.1 samplerate and exporting the same. I attempted to use Foobar and render the projects as FLACs and convert them to mp3 though foobar, but Im having issues with the LAME encoder there, it keeps telling me that theres an error. Im hoping you guys can shine some light and help me keep my sound quality as close as possible.

Ill have to export as WAV and see if the problem is still there. My concern is that when I go to burn it to a CD for the mixtape, that eventually it will have to go to mp3 anyways. Is that accurate? Its so frustrating to have this hurdle stopping me from moving forward, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm new to Reaper and don't know a whole lot about it (I know Logic). I'm have a Behringer HA400 headphone amp that I want to use for tracking. I can't figure out how to send what I have recorded in Reaper to my headphone box.

I have the headphone box plugged into Aux 1, have Aux 1 up on the channel, Aux 1 send master up and aux 1 return up. Level on headphone amp is also up. I know the headphone amp works because I sent the talkback mic to Aux 1-4 and I could hear myself talking. I just can't get what's recorded in Reaper to send to my headphones.

I've read something about going to the I/O if each channel I want to send and selecting "add new send" but when I do that there's nothing to select. I'm operating from a Mac so I have already gone into System Preferences and selected my board as the input and output for sound.
8 hours on a laptop with it through headphones :( since i thought it would be quick and easy. Nope. No way it's even making top 100.
It's not really mixed at all, but I thought we could use an extra track in here regardless :D

Anyway.
Here it is. My first complete production in a year :laughings:
And it's not the usual alt metal. Idk really know what it is. I wanted to make a prog. house track, or liquid dnb. But I don't know much about Ableton as a program yet so everything took way more time than it takes me in Cubase. If you've got a soundcloud account, why not give it a vote :D
I'll look forward to licking my wounds once I wake up ;)

I've used the korg triton pro for years and I'm ready for a new one!

Through intensive research,I have narrowed it down to these two as possible choices for my next workstation. Little problems, I can't decide!
I have come across both pros and cons for both but I still can't decide which one has the best or worst.

Here's what I think about some of the features of the fantom:
Pros: nice big interface screen that allows for some easy editing
Easy to learn and use
Great synths
Goes great with any DAW
over 120 multi-track recording

Cons:
Acoustic instruments don't sound the best, especially strings and pianos :(
Pricier

Motif xf8:
Pros-
Sounds great! Especially the pianos and pretty much everything. Not just the synths :D
less pricey! :D

Cons:
A lot of its features, when integrated with a DAW, are exclusive to Cubase :( (I'm a sonar guy)
Small interface screen
Only 24(I think) multitrack recording
Steeper learning curve

Also, thought you should know, I mainly record and produce ambient, chill out, trance, rock. Some jazz, pop, blues. So you get an idea of how I'm going to use it. Maybe that will help you help me choose. Lol

Thank you in advance for your response!

Good day everyone!

I´m new to this forum and wanted to share some of my beats that I have been making. I have produced for a year or so. I mainly dab in Techno/acid and more 4/4 stuff with friends but I have been into to hip hop/rap since I was a kid and therefore decided to make some beats of my own.

I´m looking for some feedback on this trap beat that I made in Logic 9. I used no samples or loops. I just put an Izotope mastering plugin on it to polish the sound a bit but noticed that some things sound a bit out of order. I´m working on my mastering skills to say the least.

http://soundcloud.com/panda-inc/track-id-trapped

But fire away, feedback, positive/negative, whatever you feel like!

I set a location 'in' marker, i set a location 'out' marker, then i set the 'to' point assigning where the 'in' and 'out' portions of the track will copy to. - i go to copy>paste and choose tracks 1&2 to paste onto tracks 1&2. It's says it is complete. i go to the 'to' point and listen, and nothing has copied. It will work once in a while if i turn the machine off and back on, but not recently whatsoever. It doesn't matter if I copy to the same tracks or different ones. Same outcome. Nothing seems to work.

Hi, I'll try to shortcut...Cubase4, Running in Windows7 with compatibility mode set for it to run as if it were XP Service Pack2. 6gig RAM. The issues today are....
1. Loop Browser won't identify anything. It seems is if it's continually searching for files. Nothing comes but have Fruity Loops on PC and would seem it would find them.
2. Can't ALT and DRAG to repeat/copy. If I press ALT the Object tool changes to a Draw tool.
3. Sometimes won't record...no real reason why.
4. Won't autosave although I have it set for every 4 minutes. Lost half a days work. Bummer.
Ok...now don't laugh because I'm using Cubase4. Just don't want to put out for upgrade and for my uses this should be fine.
Lastly....it never worked properly on old machine (XP, 4Gig RAM)...too many issues to mention. Basically wouldn't do the simplest things without crashing or not respond. Big thing on old setup, MIDI won't work no matter how many times I set up devices and connnections. I do the same on the Win7 machine and it's all good.
Hope someone can help me out. Thanks!
