I still have trouble singing with headphones. Even when I take one side off, I still cannot judge how loud I am singing. I find myself singing better without any headphones with the instruments coming in through speakers. But that creates the bleed.
Hello,

so, this is my first post - need to make a deep breath first ;-)

OK. I build up a homerecording "studio" (it's more or less a decent place in my living room - in the best sense of the word I am just a homerecorder...) where I use a Tascam DM3200 as mixer and DAW-controller, using the IF-FW/DMMK II FireWire-Interface. I once had a little 8-track analog mixer, but that's decades away, and was a complete other league...

I fought my way through the manual so far, and got things hooked up to my likes: I can control my DAW with the DM, and also have all my gear connected to it (guitar, bass, mic's).

What I couldn't figure out yet: I can record my signals to my DAW, but I'd like to have a) a bit more peace of choice, and b) do not want to waste the mixers EQ- and compressor-power.
So I'm looking for a setup allowing me to record my signals "dry", and with all the filters, compressors, fx... inserted to a specific mixing channel of the DM 3200.
At the moment I can only record "dry" signals, but my EQ and/or compressor settings seem to be only present in the mixer, but do not get recorded as well.

Simplified, I'm looking for a solution, allowing me to insert filters, etc. to a mixer channel and just to hear them (without having them recorded), and if need to do get them recorded (preferably without having to plug in to another channel) have a simple way of switching to "all-you-hear-is-recorded-to-disk".

I hope I could illustrate my aim in a comprehensive way - had a bit to struggle with my english :)
so thank you, anyway

kind regards
DocRock

P.S.: Since I'm new to the mixer, any help with in-depth explanations of where to tweak/set up things will be very welcome!

Hi everyone,

just wanted to say this is such an awesome forum. and I have learned a lot from here in the recent days.

I mainly sing to pre-mixed instruments ( karaoke). I am wondering will it improve the quality of my recording in anyway if I buy more or add a bit more expensive equipment. Or if I had to spend the money where should I invest for the most bang.

Here are the things i have

1. Shure beta 58A
2. M -audio Fast track - basic version
3. DAW-Ableton
4. Fostex monitor speakers
5. Headphones

Will getting a pre-amp make a difference to the quality of the vocal recording? I know there are some audio interface which comes with a pre amp.

The title should be "What should I do to improve my recording". I couldn't edit it sorry.

Good morning,

I'm looking for some insight in regards to any standalone interfaces that are able to play back 4 separate outputs simultaneously. We use backing tracks for live shows but we're needing more than just the tracks(left) and click track(right).

I bought a small interface to use with a laptop, which worked, but during one of our biggest shows recently we started losing click track feeds in our monitors and it was almost disastrous.

So I got rid of that and would rather buy a unit that doesn't require a laptop, something I can simply hit 'play' on and adjust my levels accordingly.

I've been told that the Boss BR-8 would be my best bet, but any research that I've done on the unit, I can't seem to find many details on how the unit works.

Is the BR-8 what I need? Any other standalones that could deliver what I need?

basically I have a pair of Genelec 1029A (I know it's old), and Tapco 6306 mixer which connected together.

after I move to new apartment, the Genelec active speaker start to create annoying sound when home light switch on/off, it's a big "spark" sound when light switch off in the kitchen.

Some said it's about circuit problem, some said I have to ground it.

In fact I checked my Tapco 6306 mixer, it doesn't provide grounding as I only see two contact point for 1/4" connector.

Instead of keep on wasting resource to trial and error, I would like to know some answer from experienced people to solve this problem.

Please let me know if I need to clarify anything from my setup. Thanks for helping.

I went in for a hernia operation in December 2012. There were complications from the anesthetic, and I was laid up for a month in ICU. During that time I was fitted with a trache tube, which I had for about a month. I figured it would take some time to recover my singing voice, and my low end and midrange have recovered. However, when I try to use my high range and falsetto I seem to hit a brick wall--my voice just won't go there.

Am I expecting too much too soon, or has the medical community screwed me over yet again?
Oh yeah, I'm 58, never smoked, and had no problems with my voice before this incident.

I can't seem to find one that fits me perfectly,i'm not a picky guy and i'm not loaded with cash.I'm just a guy looking for that one special mic lol. Out of the one's i've tried the MXL 960 with tube swap,MC 900 and Avantone were the best to me. Most of the time i noticed i didn't like mics with transfomers in them, they seemed wooly or hazy. A friend of mines has a M Audio Sputnik that i'm quite fond of,but me i can't afford one of those.

So fellas and ladies what can you guys recommend me that i may like in the 200 to maybe 400 dollar price range ?

Hi guys, I'm new here to the forums since I only got this recorder for a few weeks. It's been a great ride and it is amazingly fun to use this tape recorder!
But today I found a problem that I simply cannot workaround and I'm starting to think that it's a malfunction of the device. Today I needed to multitrack instruments with other people, so, as specified on the manual, I tried to use the DIRECT recording function, so that every instrument is recorded to it's own track, instead of the usual LEFT - RIGHT way. But when I activate the DIRECT function, any kind of signal stops going to the tape. I can monitor on the headphones, but I simply cannot record every channel to it's own track...

Am I doing something wrong? I'm not using a type II tape, does that have anything to do with it? This is unbelievably demoralizing and I hope that someone can help me here.... I really need to be able to record more than two sources at the same time...

I would greatly appreciate any type of help or tip.

I search for a microphone that can do the best for recording a conversations between me and my guest, in order to take some videos for my blog (a coffee blog). The recording conditions can be various but usually, records will be made in low noise rooms. The position of the speakers will be something like this:
<a href="http://homerecording.com/bbs/attachment.php?attachmentid=79744&d=1368827895" title="Name: speakers.jpg
I have a Mackie 402 VLZ 3 mixer, to manage the sound of the microphone, and to send it to the video recording device.

My budget - 150-200 Euro

Is a good choice a large diafragm condenser cardioid, like Audio Techina AT2020/AKG PERCEPTION 120/Blue Yeti Pro etc. What specs should I look for? Omni, bi or with switchable pattern ?
Thank you!

I have a fairly standard JCM900 1960B 4x12 cabinet. It was making some flubby buzzy noises at high volume, and I didn't like the bass response that much, so opened it to see what was going on. (it's got the stock Celestion 75 watt 12" speakers - I plan to change those to greenbacks at some point). I noticed that the wires connecting the speaker terminals to each other and the input of the cab were really thin. I also noticed a 2x2 wood plank running horizontally from the front panel in the center of the 4 speakers back to the back panel, where there's a screw that connects with it from the outside. Once the back panel is off, it's very loose and kind of hanging off the front panel. I removed the dinky wires and soldered in some fat copper 12 or 14 gauge speaker wire, but noticed that there were tiny little wires running from the speaker terminals to the internals of each speaker anyway.

On to the questions:

Electrical:

with the tiny wires used internally in the speakers, was there any point to installing beefier speaker wire in the cabinet?

I'm assuming that soldering can result in a better connection than the spade connectors the little connecting wires had been using. Does that really make any difference?

Structural:

The flubby buzzing I had heard appears to be the loose brace I mentioned. I don't want to remove the grill cloth if I can avoid it to tighten it to the front, so would it be a good idea to:

glue and or diagonally screw it from the inside to the front panel,

additionally brace it with a vertical piece of wood running from the center of the horizontal brace down to the bottom panel of the cabinet, or

simply remove the horizontal brace altogether?

Hi everyone,

I would like to purchase new studio headphones. I have mackie monitoring speakers which are very nice but since I moved my studio to my garage. I didn't bring over my vocal booth I built. So I get a lot of feed back. I'm trying to reduce this and order two pairs of head phones. One for the engineer/guy on the controls and one for the artist. I figure they both should be the same since. The artist can tell the guy on the controls what he/she hears and doesn't like or what not. In any case, I was trying to figure out what headphones are best in my price range for what i need them for. I'm looking at the 100-200$ range. I have read really good things about "Audio Technica atm-m50". I also heard AKG were good but not sure which model. Any input on headphones I haven't heard that would be good for my application or ones i've mention would be greatly appreciated.
Heres a link of how my studio looks minus the recent changes in the past year.. I can't add a URL since i'm new.. search youtube for "Hyperbolic Music - Doza Da MC Studio Tour" if your interested in seeing the setup. Genre:Electronic [Bass/House]

Hey there people! My names Sunny and I am looking for a mixing & mastering engineer, the reason I am asking for 'Voluntary" is because I will be launching a "Free Download E.P" (alongside a visual music video for each mixed/mastered track)
It will be used to launch the official website www.substeppers.com

I took a long break out of music due to my education/graduation but this summer I am looking to relaunch everything back in full effect. We have a strong social following on Soundcloud,Facebook,Twitter (5000 fans+) and also strong network links with companies such as MTV and also artists that are looking for paid mixing/mastering work.

The mixed and mastered tracks will be featured on many popular electronic music blog's such as FACT Mag,Mixmag,MTV etc and also be featured on BBC Radio one.

This would be good for someone's mixing/mastering portfolio.

I have recently acquired a "new" PC. It is running windows XP. I'm sure the hardware is a little out of date so I want to upgrade it for recording purposes only. I am using Sonar 8 PE on my current (windows 7) computer but its the family computer and is getting bogged down with crap.

The problem is every internet search I do for the minimum requirements for Sonar 8 I get redirected to Sonar X. I've been using 8 for so long I forgot the requirements.

The new PC I got has 704mb of RAM so I know that I have to upgrade that.

It has a 2Ghz processor as well.

I'm not a huge fan of windows 8 so I don't want a new PC.

I got the PC for free so is it even worth it to upgrade?
