I have a Mackie Onyx 1220 board that I use as an interface. The only outboard preamp that I have is a VTB-1 (rarely use). I record in a space that has a good bit of external noise (AC, Ceiling fan in next room, etc.) With that in mind, I almost always record with dynamic mics (shure Beta-58, Beta-57, SM57). If I do use a condenser, it is with the preamp gain set fairly low.
I mainly record Acoustic Guitar (SM57, MXL 603), Bass (direct in), Vocals (Shure dynamic), Trumpet (SM57). Would I benefit from an external preamp upgrade?
