Info about rack rails and rack specs

Hi all, I'm a new member. I can't believe I've misssed this forum for so long -- it's very alive!! I've been a home recording hobbiest since Cakewalk 1.0 for DOS. =)

I've gotten some great feedback on some of my tutorials in the past on other forums and I thought I'd post the link here, too. I recently completed a paper geared toward musicians and engineers dicussing the ins and outs of racks and rack rail standards (EIA 310-D), with units in both English and metric. You'll find this of particular interest if you've ever wanted to build your own racks or studio furniture.

Let me know what you think!

Here's my first rack building tutorial also:

I was actually contemplating building another rack on my own in the near future. Looks great, and i'm sure it'll be a tremendous help - thanks!

Cool -- give me a hollar if you need any help. I've built many, and I've gotten a lot of great input and ideas from other readers, too.

What material did you use? I'm thinking of building one from wood. By the way, could I find rack spacers that hold the equipment in pro audio stores?

I highly recommend 3/4 inch plywood (which is actually 23/32 inches). It holds screws much better than particle board or MDF and it comes in nice hardwood finishes.

You should be able to get the rails at pro audio shops. Look for clearance deals on long rails (they don't sell very well), and if you can get a good deal on them, just pick up a $5 hacksaw and saw them in half. I picked up some 16U rails at Guitar Center a few years ago for about a buck!

If you can't find the clearance deals, your best bet is to shop around online. I have some links on my site with some deals I've found.
