Demeter RV-1 hiss

I recently purchased a Demeter RV-1.

It sounds fantastic. However, if the output control is turned up beyond 1/4 it starts to hiss, and at about 1/2 the hiss renders it unusable for recording.

Is this normal behavior for the unit, and if so are there any operational guidelines to prevent this? I have the input on full (according to http://www.demeteramps.com/manuals/rv1usersguide.pdf) and the unit is not clipping - it could be that I am not driving it hard enough.

Do I simply need to adjust the output knob to a level where the hiss is acceptable? Or should hiss not be apparent at any output level.

I am very happy with the sound of the reverb, but it would be much appreciated if someone with the unit could comment on their experience. I know the unit is dubbed as being well shielded with a high signal to noise ratio for a spring reverb, so was surprised at the hiss.
