DBX 166xl owners

I own a dbx 166xl compressor/limiter/gate and ANY time that a signal reaches the limiter threshold, no matter where it is set, I get a very strong static sound much like digital overload? Obviously this is not a dsp, but that is what the sound is similar to.

Does anyone else experience this? Any feedback much appreciated. If this is by chance normal, then how exactly can the limiter be utilized without destroying the signal?

Yup,

The 166xl has the PeakStop limiter that is designed for brickwall protection. It designed mostly for live use. When it goes into limit it pretty much sounds like crap, but at least your speakers won't blow. If you want smooth limiting for the studio, you want units with our PeakStopPlus limiters. These are the limiters in the 1066, 566, 576, 1046, 1086, they are "soft clip" limiters.
