connecting compressor

how would i go about connecting a compressor or e.q to the alesis io 26

http://www.alesis.com/io26

look at the pics to see in the in/outs

it says in the manual to use the inserts below each mic input for compression units etc.. id imagine that the compresser would only compress the track its plugged into?

now with the presonus firestudio project connection for compressors, e.q units is on the back, which seems it would effect every track.

http://www.presonus.com/media/diagra...and EQ3B.pdf

am i right or would it be possible to use external units that effect all tracks on the io 26

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question lol

thanks

On the front panel of the io 26, there is an insert for each channel. A TRS cable from the io 26 to your effects. There ought to be a TRS on your device labeled 'output' or 'balanced'. Something like that. Or, plug your mic into the EQ or compressor, and then into the channel input of the io 26. That's how I do it, but try each way and choose what you prefer.
