I saw a story about this on CNN (I'm pretty square I guess). Have you seen this auto-tune the news thing?

There are 8 of them I think and a couple more from the same guy.
I think they are really funny, but I was wondering how it is accomplished.
So, I assume you somehow are telling the auto-tune box what key you're in and the vocal inflection of the speaker is quantized to pitches within that key. Or do they have to play every note the speaker "sings" real time when they sing it?
Did they make these videos with an expensive autotune or is the shittiest cheap model capable of this?
How the heck do they do this? My kids even thought it was funny and they don't understand the political aspect of it.
