ART Digital MPA tube preamp left channel intermittently dying

a hack
...after it warms up to operating temperature.

the thing probably shipped damaged in the first place, 4 years ago when I got it, because the digital side doesn't work right. I can't get it to synch to spdif no matter what settings I try (correct setting, incorrect settings, and variable settings) - without getting very faint but audible clicks.

It's hooked up to a line in via the balanced analog output - however it's plugged into an alesis unbalanced line in with a trs plug.

I opened up the ART's case, cranked the gain and tapped a lot on the tube, but heard absolutely no sound or tapping, echo etc.

I've been cranking the gain on this for years. Sometimes now, the left channel cuts off, for about 30 seconds, or when peaking from a louder sound will sound scratchy somewhat like a blown speaker.

During use the interior components get a bit above the temperature of 'too hot to touch', perhaps some components get hotter than that.

Any ideas on how to approach troubleshooting would be very helpful, thanks!
