Compression is valuable because it can make tracks fit into the mix as a whole....not unlike good EQ. I bought a PreSonus Bluemax compressor because it has presets....I know some engineers would scoff at using presets but they really seem to work well.....it also can be operated in manual mode. Compression usually works best in moderation unless you are trying to create unique guitar and drum sounds and then the skies the limit....squash away. The basics are really pretty easy to understand, ratios, threshold, etc. but using them takes a lot of practice but I know my recordings are better because of it.
