about my "another pre amp" thread...i may have won

I think you're being a little hard on the guy.

If he was, in fact, merely looking out for his commission ... then he wouldn't have told you that you don't need a preamp. :D

Rather, he would have told you that you need like 10 preamps.

In your case, you just happened to to be talking with someone who just wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. And there's nothing wrong with that, inherently. I mean, he can't help it that he's not very smart or just not educated on his product. I mean ... it's not a very high-paying gig, so it's probably not going to attract many ivy league grads any time soon. :D

And if it was a higher-paying gig that attracted smart people ... then you'd wind up having to pay twice as much. You got a good price on something, but in return, the service wasn't so hot. So what are you complaining about, really? I mean ... it is what it is!

.

Not bad... just generally uninformed... and reluctant to admit it...

You don't go to Guitar Center for advise... (you come here), GC is for impulse purchases, list sales, and the used rack...

I like them for the "walk-in walk-out with my product and not wait a week for shipping", but then you end up paying sales tax... its a trade off. If I can have an item shipped, I do. If I absolutely can't wait (which has always been due to my own impatience, not an actual rush need for a product), or I don't want the thing getting UPS'd all over the place, then I buy in-store.

luckily, i have some pres already so not such a bad thing. its ok now though, im not mad anymore.

like i said, i just wish they were honest about it at least.

i go there and buy stuff when i dont want it shipped either. also, they will almost always go down on the price, even if just a couple sets of strings. they have to match any internet price(like MF), so you get the same deals there.

Cough... cough... same company ...Cough

i know, i was just saying you dont have to pay tax, well you still do, they just lower the price so you walk out paying the same amount as if you ordered online. amd if you know how to talk, you can almost always get it even cheaper

...i did get a good mic and some other stuff out the door for 300, so all in all its ok.
God, I hate that term, "X$ - out the door". Brings to mind buying something in a run down pawnshop where the merchandise is hot and you have to sneak it out to hide it in your car trunk.

hahaha

when i bought my control surface(which i returned), before that i asked the dude if they had any longer firewire cables, he said they were out, so i figured no big deal.

he left to go get the cables for the control surface, i walked into the studio room to look at stuff and he came back. he said "het man, do you have deep pockets?"

i thought he was asking if i had a bunch of cash, i said "no man, im just looking" and i laughed.

he handed me a bundled up cable and said "here man, put this in your pocket, its the only way we are going to get this out of here."

i thought it was a usb cable for the midi controler, and didnt think he was serious. he assured me he was serious.

after i got out to my car i pulled the cable out of my pocket and it was a long firewire cable hahaha. it wasnt tagged and he just gave it to me haha.
i thought it was pretty cool of him.

too bad i returned his sale and he probably lost his commision on it, at least i bought some other stuff too. oh well

I don't think I'm uninformed at all, and neither is anyone in my department. In fact all the guys I work with really seem to know their shit. Some guys specialize more in live sound stuff, some know a lot about dj gear and others specialize in keyboards. Me, I know mics, preamps, software, etc... No doubt I've had some shakey service at GC in the past and even let the manager know that when I was hired but, at least at my store, you're not going to get some dumbass mistaking a power supply for a preamp.

There are always exceptions to the rule... But what I've found, are that most of the local GC employees are musicians who need a day job gig to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. Live sound guys are probably the most informed in the pro audio department... but live sound is not studio recording by any stretch of the imagination. I've got to bite my tongue every time I walk in there and hear another "Specialist" steering a customer down the path of ruin...
