Using a Recording Interface - Should I Also Get a Dedicate Mic Preamp?

Hey all,

I currently do my recording through a Mackie Onyx 400f interface. I seem to get adequate gain, so vocals, guitars, keys, and drums all sound pretty good when run through the built-in pres.

However, I've recently come across the option to pick up an ART tube preamp (ART TPS) for relatively cheap. I was wondering whether pairing the ART with the Mackie's built-in preamps would yield a better result (or just using the ART and bypassing the Mackie). I know it will be a different sound, but I simply don't know how to predict the type of sound I'll get or compare the "quality" between the ART and the 400f pres. Would I get more "oomph" when recording drums with the ART, for instance?

These are some nooby questions, so any relevant information is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

Think i answered this on gearslutz too,but the art isn't gonna give you a jump in quality over the stock pre's in the onyx. Not the TPS or DPS anyway, maybe the mpa gold or mpa ii would.
