Better quality with mutli-track?

Right now I record directly into my laptop. Someone told me if I get a mutli-track mixer it will improve my quality. They also said it was safer, cause laptops can crash, get viruses and all that. I get the safer thing, but will it really improve my quality?

Whoever gave you the information is confused.

Unless you're talking about a stand alone multitrack recorder. That can be more stable than a laptop. But it won't necessarily sound better. That depends on preamp and converter quality.

If you're using the $1.95 built-in soundcard of the laptop... yah, that sucks.

But a proper external soundcard/interface will give you excellent quality.

Once sound is converted to digital, how its stored is irrelevant....

Also, you don't have to worry about viruses if you keep your recording computer off the internet and secured properly in a home network envirinment.
