Automated Patch Bay?

This might turn out to be a dumb question, but here goes. Is there any such thing as a patch bay that works like a MIDI patch bay does? That is, where you can just switch between different configuations by hitting a button instead of plugging and unplugging. I've never seen one.

If there is no such thing, then why not? Is it because there would be signal degradation going through the switching electronics? Is it because it would not be worth it for most people?

Just basing my reply on the S.W.A.G factor...
Looks like it would be expensive because of the switching circuitry. And as far as signal degredation... I have a passive monitor (computer monitor) switchbox that I refuse to use because when I use it fonts take on a "ghost." There is a lot of signal degredation in video I'm sure there would also be some in audio. If it were active it would prolly work just fine but that would cost mucho bucks.. at least that's my guess.
