noob question about midi ports on rack effects

Im looking at the back of several of my rack effects unit, and many of them have midi ports. Some in and out, and some in, out, and thru. My question is, can I hook up a midi controller and control the parameters of the effects? Ive read some of my equipments' manuals and they don't really say what if anything the midi ports do. Any help would be appreciated.

Basically Yes.

If there's nothing else involved, you'd connect OUT on controller to IN on first effect, then THRU of that to IN on next effect, and so on.

Then, set each effect to receive midi on a specific channel, so that each effect is different, then the controller can activate each of the effects as required.

I've played with using MIDI to change parameters in my old Boss SE50 and SE70 effects units. With those things I think you could change nearly any parameter. The manuals had extensive MIDI implementation information.
