Most useful MIDI controller functions

What are your favorite functions/setups/abilities with MIDI keyboard controller?
I'm am about to buy an Alesis 25 key controller and want to unroll it with a bang! What are your tricks
and fast-track tips?
 
I think my favourite is to setup macros so one knob does multiple things. I use a Kenton control freak and can setup one knob to crossfade between 2 synths or control cutoff, release and level. In combination with a midi solutions event processor I can map my 909 velocity to volume, then make group volume knobs for certain sounds like toms and cymbals. Not sure if Alesis does this though
