Midi

So I have an axiom49 usb midi keyboard
I have setup my macbook pro 2013(two usb slots) such a way that my usb audio interface(focusrite 2i4) is attached directly to one usb slot of the macbook.
then the other usb slot of the macbook is being used by my external hardrive where all my projects, library samples, drum loops etc is stored. it is being actively used by logic X during any sessions so obviously I cant remove the external hardrive whenever Im on logic sessions.

so this leads me to no more availbale usb slot for my midi keyboard.
I know i could use a usb hub in this case but for some reason I just want to dedicate
1 slot for the audio interface and 1 slot for the external hardrive directly to maybe minimize any issues.

Now my question is, If I use a midi cable out from my keyboard go directly at the back of the focsurite 2i4 which also has a midi input, would this affect midi performance(latency or whatsoever) of the setup? or should I go for USB route(which i will be forced to use a usb powered hub)
