I recently downloaded a sound font (*.sf2) from Hammersound, but I don't know how to use it. I have onboard sound: VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM). Do I need another program to use these sound fonts? Is there a sound font player? I want to use the fonts instead of GM to play back Finale 2003 doucuments.

You either need (a) a Sound Font-compatible card like the SB Live or Audigy, or (b) a software sample playback synth like the VSampler that can load Sound Fonts.

rgcaudio.com 's "sfz" is a FREE soundfont VSTi.

I also use Bismark's "BS-16" (not free but works great).

There are others. Always check out the mother of all VST sites: www.kvr-vst.com
Al is right, you could also use VSampler of any of the other samplers that play soundfonts if you have the money: Kontact, Sampletank, Gigastudio, etc.

(You will want to get a real 24-bit soundcard... a large soundfont played on one with a VSTi synth sounds SOOOOOO much better....)
