Should I get a Shure SM7b?

I had one of these mics a couple of years ago and liked it for the little bit I used it, which was on other people. I have been thinking about getting another but I have read many posts saying that it needs a really good preamp to do it justice. I would be using it straight into my Tascam US-1800 interface. Should this be enough for this mic?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

IMO, if you are recording a strong singer (powerful), yes. The 60db preamps in the 1800 are sufficient. I have used it many times before I upgraded to an external pre. I must say tho, that a better pre will bring out more of the mic's quality, with less noise. That could be said about any mic, but having a pre with more clean gain, like a 1073 clone, will get you better results with the SM7b.

I use an SM7B quite often and love it. It's definitely one of those mics you'd always want to have around.

I originally used it with a digi 003 and thought it was a great mic, but when I upgraded my preamps I really knew it was a great mic!

Either way, worth having for certain.
