Bring Back Transfat!
Component and construction wise, what makes the better mics better?
In simple language what makes diaphrams, electronics and bodies better than others?

Think about it. What makes a Lambourgini Diablo (is that spelled right?) better than a Yugo? Better materials, closer manufacturing tolerences, craftsmanship, attention to fine detail........

I'm gonna pretend I'm one of my kids.

Materials...better in what way?
Tolerances closer...where?
Which tolerances? Which materials?

Low noise resistors, tubes, and transistors (often hand-selected), high quality capacitors, transformers that don't ring or saturate easily, mu-metal shielding. In the case of tolerances, small gap clearances in condensers and dynamics. Even diaphragm coating and correct diaphragm tensioning. RF shielding. Double and triple mesh grilles.
