I have been investigating and I have decided on which mics to buy. any feed back would be greatly appreciated.
I already own a shure beta 57A---snare
Two overheads PVM 480's
audix D4----kick

I also play Djembe and conga and other percussion. I figure the two 480s up in front of the drums and the D4 right on the Djembe or which ever drum is featured.

Except for the 57A, I havent bought the mics yet. Does anyone dissagree with that set up?
 
Well, I don't know much about the Audix or the Peavey mics.
I would suggest a AKG D112 for the kick. Great mic for kick drum. This would also sound great on djembe.

And maybe pair of Oktava MC012 for your overheads. I use these and think they're great for drum overheads, but also many many other instruments too. The other cool thing about it is you can buy a large diaphragm capsule for it later and have a great vocal mic on the cheap too.

I would also think about the SM57 for the snare instead of the Beta ... but since you have that already by all means use it. :)

I too would have to reccomend the AKG D112 on kick, but on overheads I would use AKG C-1000 for overheads. They are very good for micing acoustic instruments and I have used them to record vocals. They are rugged enough for live applications as well.

I have seen the akg d112 but I dont think it will fit in my budget. as far as toms I was hoping the overheads would pick them up.

the best you can buy is:
snare shure 57
kick AKG D112
overheads two shure condencers.

yeeeahhh, kind of led zeppelin record.

(if you want to mic the toms, whatever, 57)
 
I too have a BETA 57, and was wondering if instead of using it on the snare use it on the toms, and then buy a regular 57 for the snare.
This would be my total setup:
-SM57/snare
-AKG D112/kick
-BETA SM57/Between the floor tom and 14" tom
-SM94-LC/overhead (maybe another one to do X-Y later on)
 
The overheads will pick up the toms just fine, but you'll wind up micing the room a little more than the drums. Especially if you're going to jam basic tracks with the other instruments in the same room. Not impossible, just a little more of a challenge to avoid the bleed over between instruments.
Eventually, you could dedicate some mics for just toms. I use Shure AXS6 and get pretty good results ... they were around $120 each, I think.
I haven't heard an Audix in action, but my take is that the AKG D112 is worth the extra cash. So many pro studios use that mic for kick/bass because it has proven itself in the past. But if it's just not in your budget ... get the best you can get.
As far using the beta on the toms and getting an SM57 for snare ... i think that's a good idea. Snare is just such a crucial part of the kit, so it's better to use a mic that is better suited for that and skimp on the toms if you have to. My opinion only, of course.
