DIY mic builders?

I'm sure somewhere in the forum are some mic builders and threads in the subject, but hey, why not bring it up again. :D

As of late I've been fascinated with mic uogrades and kit building.

I have 2 mxl mics given to me, and they sound 'ok'

I figured why not turn them into good mics.

What experiences have some of you had with modding and building some of these kits?

Figured, I'd first mod my 2001, then my 990 and then actually do a whole kit build

Seems a good way to build up a nice mic locker with the only downside being a lack of resale value.

What say you?
:D

Building a new mic might be easier than modding an existing one, especially if you start out with a kit.

The MXL 2001, 2003, 2006 or likewise is a good platform to mod. Just replace the capsule with one from Transound, fi. The older ones have a board with through-hole components.

A lot of good info is to be found on the Yahoo micbuilders list.
