in celebration of my web space no longer being broke, i'm hosting a 4 way mic shootout..

nothing fancy, but i've set up four pairs of microphones and played my guitar (badly) for your comparison pleasure!

tell me which one you prefer,,,or better yet, put them in order.

maybe you wana guess what they are?

all mics are run into focusrite octopre, and the levels set as close as i could get them to eachother.

there's no processing other than wide stereo panning.

Nice playing!! I really liked #3. The lows/midrange pop'd nicely to the front and the highs had a nice shimmer to them. Other than the mic pre, I'm sure you will let us know what equipment was used.

thanks for listening! and thanks for the comment :)

i'll post up the mics when this has run it's course...

quite an interesting mix of microphones,,which is why i've posted this.

I'm leaning towards 2. then 4. then 3, then 1 from best to worst. I do think that 3 is the cleanest and the most detailed of the bunch. As heard on the speakers of my 4yo laptop anyway. But in terms of source and song, 2 seems to suit. At first glance anyway.

#3 rocks. #'s 1 & 2 seem too bassy, and #4 lacks high end detail. None of them truly suck. I just think #3 was the most balanced track of the four.-Richie

yeah the number seems liver to me too.. but did you record it all at once? if so.. where you placed closer to number3?
i liked 4 a lot to

hi there,

yeh it's one take,,,one performance.

i kept further back from the mics than you normally would, to reduce the effect of the them not being in the same physical space <obviously not possible)

i did put all the capsules as close together as possible though, and took care to be sure that the direction was the same, and symmetry between pairs was the same.

give or take minute detail in placement,,,any differences you hear are down to microphone size/type/polar pattern etc.

thanks for listening.

what's a reasonable waiting time for one of these things? maybe ten votes or something?

1 = Sennheiser md421n

2 = electrovoice D054 (think pl9?)

3 = oktava mk219 with grill mods

4 = shure sm81

my favourite was the sennheisers and least favourite was the sm81s....

kinda the opposite of what i thought. :laughings:
