how to wire a balance pot...

What I want to do is pan between two pickup sources on my guitar. I have a 12 string acoustic on which I have installed a L R Baggs I- Beam soundboard transducer pickup with preamp. I then added a under saddle piezo pickup. Then i soldered 3/32 mono connector onto the piezo pickup wire since that was the kind of connector on the I Beam pickup and plugged them both into a mono 2 into 1, 3/32" splitter and then plugged that into the LR Baggs preamp that came with the I beam. What I was wondering is this. I have a stereo volume potentiometer which I think is the same thing as a balance pot so, if I wire both pickups to that and then go into the preamp, will that enable me to blend the two pickups? Also, do I need a stereo splitter instead of a mono? Nothing like home brewing,eh? ALSO, I couldn't find any diagrams online concerning how to wire a balance control. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx.

The stereo pot should work if it's the right resistance. Here's a diagram for a bass, but the concept is the same:
