Midi pickup for electric guitar?

I have a midi sound module that I use for strings, solo instruments, etc. The guitar sounds are really true, but when played with a keyboard the guitar qualities are lost even though the sound is there. If I bought a midi pickup and added it to an electric guitar would I get reasonably authentic sounds for classical guitar, mandolin, etc. Of course, I could hire real musicians - but the reason I've started home recording is that I can't afford to break the bank to make a recording. Any suggestions?

I had a GVox guitar pickup and module that I tried for a while. It was OK for playing strings and such but the latency was frustrating. If you are a half-decent keyboard player MIDI is better with keyboard. I suppose if I had worked at it harder I would have improved, but I never thought MIDI guitar or mandolin sounded real enough for my taste. The GVox was Ebay bait when I saw they were selling for more than I paid for it.
