Guitar Packs/bass Packs.

Packs are [theoretically] a great idea, because a beginner doesn't know what he wants/needs. But I think, even if the included guitar is decent (it'd be best if your 1st guitar was a keeper, which you can gradually mod/update, but KEEP), the amps are usually a ripoff. It'd be better to pick out a guitar you like (and can try before you buy, unlike the boxed stuff) and then get something like a SansAmp knock-off (Behringer V-tone GDI21) direct box and some connectors and plug into your stereo or headphones.

IMHO people who get the packs as a gift and continue playing, do that not "because of the pack", but "in spite of the pack" - they go on to sell their cheap gear at a great loss or trade-in for something better once they can begin to discriminate.

But such is reality of mass-produced instruments. At least most can afford a guitar now. It used to be more expensive.
