That is proper Gibson neck binding. The binding is supposed to include the "nibs" that extend the fret. When building or refretting, most guitarists/luthiers choose to just have the fret extend into the binding because it's cheaper and easier to do. LPs and SGs have always been done that way, but older models may have had a refret so the nibs are gone.
