trying for left side vocals, right side guitar

I've got a soundblaster audio card w/ only one input, and I'm trying to set up the audio so that the guitar will go in on one side of the track, and voice on the other, while recording both at the same time. I've got a y-cable that places both of them in stereo at the same time, but I want to split the sound up. Is this even possible?

take a three conductor, sleeve ring tip 1/8inch connector.

Then two 2 conductor sleeve tip conductors. solder the sleeves of all of them together. then solder the tip of each, one to the tip of the three conductor, and the other to the ring of the 3 conductor thing.

A spliter just divides the signal into two separate wires, with the same thing in each, so taking to things and going back just puts them back together.

Also make sure you're using the aux in, not the mic in, which is mono.

us the pan left and pan right on your mixer then you can cut that apart in something like Sound Forge and double the tracks to make them stereo

If you are trying to plug the instruments directly into the Y cable it won't work very well (or at all) without a preamp or mixer.
