Recommend an entry-level powered sub to go with M-Audio BX5a's?

Thanks, jeffree.

Part of the reason I'm asking is that I have done a search, but most of the info I have found concerns the older BX5 speakers, not the BX5a's. It seems there are some important differences between these speakers.

That said, someone must be using a sub with the newer BX5a's. Anyone have a recommendation?

Also, surely someone can quickly tell me how a sub attaches to these speakers without referring me to some vast technical article. Any help?

Generally speaking, you will run your left/right outputs into the subwoofer. There, the crossover will send the appropriate frequencies to the output jacks on the sub, to which you connect your monitors.

And Osz, the BX5s have a high-pass switch that drops low freqs below 100 or 80 Hz so that there's less overlap, better integration. I don't know if your BX5As have the same. I'm using this budget sub with surprisingly good results:

Just found a good price advertised here:

I like the 8" model (down to 40Hz) because there's no mushiness, at least in my studio, and because it has both line ins and outs that make connections solid and easy. It seems like a good fit with the BX5s. It won't match the sound of the SBX, but it sounds surprisingly clean and tight.

If you don't have such a cut-off switch, then you may want to consider a sub that internally routes just the lows to the sub. The fine M-Audio SBX sub does this, but it's pricey. I believe that a few other models (Tannoy?) out there do this as well although they're also in the $300+ range.

Good luck,

J.
