Need some help with my Behringer U-Phoria UM2 audio interface

As my title suggests I am having trouble with my recently purchased audio interface (Behringer U-Phoria UM2). I am using an Audio Technica AT2005 USB cardioid-dynamic microphone to talk to my friends via skype, curse, etc. My problem is that when I connect my mic to the audio interface via XLR cable I have to turn my gain up all the way in order for my friends to hear me and so I can monitor myself.
I have looked everywhere for help with this but haven't gotten an answer. I really like this microphone and would like to be able to record songs eventually with it too, but I can't if my audio interface isn't working properly
So what do you think is the problem?
Do you have any suggestions on what to look for and do?

Do you also have the USB cable plugged in? The mic needs power to work correctly. Do you have the phantom power turned on on the Behr? It's not clear in the AT2005 manual whether it can be powered by phantom power through the XLR cable.
