Hi all,

I've been a dabbler in music production for 20 years or so and my son grew up to be very passionate about music and music production. Up until now it's been easy for me to work out what to get him for his birthday because I've known enough about music production to know what would be good for him to have. However...

This year he's turning 18, is studying sound production at a tech college and intends to go to a specialist university to do further study next year in music production and because he's intending to be a professional and it's only a hobby for me, I've kinda reached the limit of my knowledge. So I'm not sure what would be a good birthday present - something which a) he'll like; and b) which will useful to him in the future.

We have a spare bedroom which is dedicated to music which contains:
  • Acoustic Steel String Guitar
  • Classical Guitar
  • Electric Guitar & amp
  • Electric Bass Guitar & amp
  • Upright Piano
  • Some other instruments: Trumpet, Flute etc.
  • Apogee Jam Guitar input
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB 2.0 Interface 2 in 2 out
  • Novation Impulse 61 Midi keyboard
  • Yeti USB mic
  • Behringer U-CONTROL UMX25 Midi Keyboard
  • KP3 Kaos pad

He uses Logic Pro X running on his Macbook pro (mid 2014 model, 13" 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz; 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x4GB; 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm) which is connected to a 27" display, keyboard and mouse.

A couple of weeks ago he bought himself a new desk to set all of this up properly and, during conversations about the set up, I did get a couple of ideas regarding what he'd like to get in the future:

  1. A mixing unit
  2. Studio monitoring speakers

I have no experience with either of these two (to be honest: my son had to explain to me what studio monitoring speakers were).

Percussion is clearly missing from the list as well so I've considered the possibility of electronic drum kit/pads. Again, I have no experience with these.

Another thought is that he may need more processing power than he's got with the laptop. But maybe it's good enough for now.

I'm leaning toward a mixer at this stage and considered the Behringer Digital Mixer X32 Compact.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

It sounds like you already have everything needed to make a good recording.
If he's good at recording and ready to upgrade his gear, maybe get a good single channel preamp or better microphones. Monitoring speakers are a good idea, too, but you can monitor okay on good headphones. Percussion is a good idea, too. I think you kinda answered your own question tbh.
