Calling all Zoom H4n owners - does the H4n charge NiMH batteries?

I found this H4n review on Amazon.com, where the reviewer states:
"I also like the little things I'm still discovering, like when I put Ni-MH batteries in and then plugin in the adapter it recharges the batteries."

Then there is a second instance of this, confirming the charging thing here...
"It also appears that the NiMH batteries in the Zoom received a charge while the AC power adapter was in use overnight — they were pretty flat when the recording started, but by the next morning were apparently fully charged again. Not sure I saw anything about this in the manual, but I may have missed it. Nice if true."

In the Zoom H4n manual on page 6, it does state that...
"H4n cannot be used for recharging."

My question is to anyone who owns an H4n, have you tried this, and does it work?

the circutry will run that power from the adapter across the battery terminals...which will charge them...but the heat from the reaction in the batteries might harm the unit...so that may be zoom covering thier own butts.

I cannot answer completely as I have not let my H4n sit with discharged batteries and the charger plugged in. However I can tell you that my H4n has been constantly recording for the last 24 hours and the battery area is cool as a cucumber. As an electrical engineer I can tell you that such portable equipment that (can) use alkaline batteries it should not be designed to let an adaptor charge the cells. The adaptor cable plug on insertion "make" the adaptor power circuit and "break" the battery circuit
