The thing is, its most likely better. Programs are created like this to be free, because people are sick of dealing with, and being ripped off by major companys in it for money.

sort of like open office is to microsoft word. Only Open office is just as good, but it has 3 appeals: its free, its not microsoft, and its good. :D

Even better - now that Office 12 has completly changed its design all the people who learnt on the old office can switch to Open Office to keep the same layout feature (or just not upgrade).

But more importantly, with Office's new look - hopefully the OO team will stop playing catch up to microsoft and start creating new and inovative features that will really set it apart from its microsoft counterpart. :D

Also now that both Dell and Time are now selling Linux based PCs and with Ubuntus dapper drake arriving.. it will be the year for Open Source i hope :D

Someone point to me to somewhere I can run an install file and have this on my PC please ... I cannot be bothered trying to figure out compiling stuff. It's easier to crack Photoshop than to figure that stuff out!!

If your running Windows XP then just click and download those files below. Install the first one (GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment) then the second file (The Gimp)
http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gimp-win/gtk+-2.8.9-setup-1.zip
http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gimp-win/gimp-2.2.10-i586-setup.zip

The links i give are mirrors in Kent, UK. For a quicker download speed download from a mirror closer to you. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Also you can make The Gimp look like Photoshop so you can switch with ease. It's called Gimpshop. (http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241) ..and you can download it for Windows here.

If you enjoy using The Gimp then PLEASE donate anything you can via http://www.gimp.org/donating/

I've never heard of this 'Open Office' thing before. So it's basically as good as Office XP, but it's free?

Basically, yeah. I've been using on my laptop for a few years now ... interestingly it's started popping up on entry-level systems from Dell and the like instead of MS Works.

GIMP is good, but its not Photoshop.
And GIMP is more stable on Linux.

Not in my world... GIMP crashes frequently on the Linux side for me... Never has on the Windows side...

bascially, yah. theres features in office that oo doesn't have but its what i tell everyone to try before shelling out for any edition of office. most stay with it.

Hell - why not just get ubuntu and get every bit of common software you need for free including the OS.

You got an old PC lying around somewhere? Of course you have, so download this and install it. Then play - and welcome to the world of Linux.

0f course, you dont really need an old extra computer. i installed ubuntu on my xp machine - ubuntu took care of setting up the disk properly so that both systems can co-exist. that's called dual-booting. i can start in windows or in ubuntu and reboot back and forth as necessary. kinda cool.

At the moment my PC is booting XP, ubuntu, Red Hat, OSX, and im working on an old Vista developers release.

The only reason i suggested an old machine is that if its too slow to run XP then ubuntu can give it an extra lease of life. Also dual-booting isn't really something to be attempted when you've not heard of Open Office, this way people might have the chance to try something new without running the risk of messing up the install and destroying the windows partition (its happened to me a few times ;))
